Rolex Sea-Dweller 16660

This is a pre-owned Rolex Sea-Dweller matte dial gents 16660 watch.

40mm case size in stainless steel, black dial on a stainless steel oyster bracelet, powered by an automatic movement. This Rolex is in good condition complete with box only.

Circa 1984. Our Xupes reference is COM1701 should you need to quote this.”Devilishly handsome and numerological tantalising, the Sea-Dweller 16660 is a dearly loved case and dial combination of Rolex collectors. The reference number is obviously where it adopted its nickname the “Triple Six”.The ref. 16660 was produced from 1978-1989 and was the first Rolex Sea-Dweller with an increased depth rating of 4000 feet (1220 meters). With this feature came a larger helium escape valve to prior models such as the reference 1665. The valves in these watches help to release trapped gasses in the watchcase in underwater descents making them highly functional. Another larger feature to be introduced to the 16660 is the big bezel pearl at 12.

It also has the familiar non-Cyclops date, synonymous with all Sea-Dwellers and no other models as standard from the brand. The caseback is engraved around the circumference including the text stating “Original Gas Escape Valve” in black writing. The case is in overall good condition, and the bracelet too, with a little over-polishing to deployment clasp visible at the crown. The aluminium bezel has seen some light wear, with marks visible at around 6 and 3, and some scratches between 4 and 11.The lugs have the desirable pin hole configuration on this model, making it easy for the divers of the time to change their bracelet for a diving strap if necessary. Rolex stop putting pin holes in their Sea-Dwellers around 2005, so all reference 16660 examples would have this feature. This model houses the Rolex calibre 3035, automatic date.

The matt dial has seen some natural aging and shows signs of degradation to the lume. The watch comes on a Rolex 93160 Oyster bracelet with 592 end links, and a folding clasp, with the original box.”Jacob Tomkins is founder and publisher of Twelve: Watch Buyer’s Journal.
